Happiness Activities

Lesson 5

As we know by now, 50% of happiness is in our genes, 10% depends on the circumstances of life and the rest 40% can be cultivated by us by taking up activities, intentionally and voluntarily, that bring joy and happiness.

These intentional activities we call Happiness Activities.

You can find activities that fit your interests, your values and your needs.

Let us classify and list a few activities to make it clear:

Everyone needs to spare time regularly for at least one activity to take care of the body, mind and soul. It may be aerobics, yoga, meditation, walking, or any of the physical exercises.

Stress is the major concern in modern life. One needs to learn how to cope with stress, trauma, and hardships of life.

Finding flow and living in the present is the surest path to authentic happiness. You can choose a happiness activity that helps you enhance flow experience.

You can enrich your life by developing positive relationships and by broadening social connections.

Committing to your goals and a committed goal pursuit leads to accomplishments, thus enhancing your happiness quotient.

You may want to enhance your positive emotions about the past by practicing gratitude or your positive emotions about the future by practicing optimism.

We will be taking up some proven happiness activities from each of these sections in our subsequent lessons.

(I will be away for about a month. So, the next lesson may appear after some gap. Be happy!)

Flow

Lesson 4

One thing I can say for sure – flow brings real happiness!

Flow is a state of joy, creativity and total involvement, in which problems seem to disappear and there is an exhilarating feeling of transcendence.

According to Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, flow is what we feel when we are fully alive, involved with what we do, and in harmony with the environment around us. It is something that happens most easily when we sing, dance, do sports – but it can happen when we work, read a good book, or have a good conversation.

Engagement, or flow, is one of the strongest pillars around which Positive Psychology is built. Here, one is fully in the present, immersed in something worthwhile. For an auto-telic person, the experience becomes its own reward.

We each have the potential to experience flow, whether at work, at play or in our relationships.

The Art and Science of Happiness

I teach what everyone seeks but finds it difficult to achieve. It remains more and more elusive as one chases it. Everyone believes he knows everything about it but is, in fact, ignorant and often misguided. I am talking about happiness and well-being.

According to Sonja Lyubomirsky, Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside, “One of the greatest obstacles to attaining happiness is that most of our beliefs about what will make us happy are in fact erroneous. Yet they have been drummed into us, socialized by peers and families and role models and reinforced by the stories and images ever present in our culture. Many of the presumed sources of happiness seem so intuitive and commonsensical that all of us – even happiness researchers! – are prone to fall under their spell.”

The happiness myths need to be understood and overcome. You can teach yourself to be happy. The art and science of happiness and well-being can be learned and taught.

At LifeSkills, we have gone deep to blend the best of the modern science of Positive Psychology with the ancient wisdom of Yoga and Meditation. We have added a dash of Laughter Yoga into the cask to make it sparkle. Our programmes show the pathway to authentic happiness, well-being and fulfilment. We help you to flourish!

Happy@Work

My Sanika Cancer Care Society organized an event ‘Happy@Work’ for the office-goers at Jaal Auditorium, Indore recently.

We were happy to conduct a session on happiness at work with inputs from Positive Psychology, Yoga, Meditation, Laughter Yoga and Behavioural Science. Due emphasis was laid on happiness activities, flow and use of signature strengths. The session was well received by the audience.

It was nice to see a youngster come up to us and tell how much he loved the session. He said, he had attended talks of almost all the motivational and spiritual gurus who had come to town but it was only here that he could find a glimpse of what he had been searching for.

East Meets West

On this holy day of Holi, i announce the birth of the Indore Gharana* of Happiness..
It is a blend of the best of the ancient east with the modern west, after years of maturing in deep, seasoned, human casks..
Here, the wisdom of the sages from the Tantras adds value and depth to the scientific concepts of Positive Psychology..
It is proposed to be imparted in the traditional guru-shishya parampara** wherein the teacher is more of a friend-philosopher-guide..
Looking forward to early birds, seekers, and happiness-dilittantes willing to travel all the way to Indore, India for a holistic well-being sojourn..

i teach happiness

my quest for happiness has been fun..
i read Confucius, Buddha, and Aristotle..
savoured chocolate, wine and good company..
was a laughter professor for some time..
dug deep into behavioural science to discover myself..
had a long lasting affair with Positive Psychology, Seligman, Csikszentmihalyi and Lyubomirsky..
tried learning a few trade secrets from the happy monks Matthieu Ricard and Dalai Lama..
did research on yoga nidra and discovered the wonder world of Swami Satyananda Saraswati..
all these streams continue to trickle in the background..
i continue to learn, but it’s high time now to give back..
i, therefore, teach happiness..
